The Beauty and Personal Care Industry

Take a look at any e-commerce platform, and you'll see a trending product category that's gaining popularity, especially among ladies – personal care products. Many of us can relate to spending on personal care and beauty items. Let's delve into the history and growth of this billion-dollar industry.

  1. Ancient Origins: Personal care and beauty have deep historical roots dating back centuries. Ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome used natural ingredients like olive oil and honey for cleansing and moisturizing. Beauty played a significant role in ancient mythology, with stories of divine beauty like Aphrodite and Helen of Troy.

  2. Profitable Business: The beauty and personal care industry is not only huge but also highly profitable. Beauty and haircare companies often make more than 60 cents for every dollar they earn. This is higher than manufacturing companies, which typically make around 30-40 cents, and retail companies, which usually make between 40 to 60 cents for every dollar they earn (Forbes.com).

  3. Brand Loyalty: Brand loyalty is a hallmark of the beauty and personal care business. When customers find a brand they trust, they tend to stick with it for the long term. This loyalty can extend across various product lines, and these loyal customers keep coming back for years. For example, someone who loves a particular personal care brand's moisturizer is likely to become a fan of their cleanser, sunscreen, and other products. They might even recommend the brand to friends and family, creating a network of loyal customers.

  4. Frequent Purchases: Personal care products, including personal care items, are bought regularly, often every one to two months. This regular buying pattern ensures a steady stream of income, as customers continue using these products over time.

As you can see, the beauty industry has a long history, and it's still growing. In 2023, the Beauty & Personal Care market is making around US$625.70 billion, and it's expected to keep growing by about 3.32% each year from 2023 to 2028, according to Statista.

It's no surprise that the beauty and personal care industry has become one of the largest industries recently. Who knows, maybe you can be part of it one day by starting your own personal care brand. If you're interested in becoming a future player in this industry, join our Beauty and Pharmaceutical Business program and get ready.

Thank you, and we'll see you at UNIJI!

Accounting for Sustainability

What's a common issue that frequently makes headlines these days? Pollution undoubtedly tops the list.

In fact, pollution in Jakarta has escalated to the point where we've earned the dubious distinction of having the worst air quality index in the world. The air quality index here has soared to 165, well beyond the recommended limit of 100. If you gaze out your window in Central Jakarta, you're more likely to see a dreary grey sky than a clear blue one. This dire situation has also led to a surge in respiratory infections, flu cases, and more.

In response, the government is preparing a tax aimed at companies that contribute to environmental pollution. This tax, known as "Pajak Pencemaran Lingkungan," is poised to make companies rethink their environmental impact.

This is where sustainability accounting steps into the spotlight. According to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), sustainability accounting involves connecting sustainability efforts to a company's strategy, assessing risks and opportunities, and providing the tools for measurement, accounting, and performance management. In essence, it's not just about a company's financial health; it's about understanding the risks, opportunities, and the company's sustainability.

Speaking of sustainability, businesses are increasingly embracing the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) concept, which focuses on Profit (Finance), People (Social), and Planet (Environment). The goal is for companies to operate sustainably.

The world is shifting towards greater appreciation for people and the environment, and the business world is no exception. Starbucks Corporation is a prime example. When you step into a Starbucks store, you'll notice their emphasis on reusable and environmentally friendly items. Starbucks is also renowned for prioritizing its employees' well-being.

If you're interested in accounting and want to make a positive impact on the environment, exploring sustainability accounting with UNIJI could be the right path for you. It plays a crucial role in shaping the future of accounting and allows you to make a meaningful difference in your environment.

Movies: Beyond Entertainment

What do you do when you're bored or hanging out with friends? Watching movies is probably one of your go-to choices. But have you ever wondered what movies bring beyond pure entertainment?

  1. Economic Powerhouse
Movies aren't just about captivating stories; they're vital for the economy. In the US, the movie industry employs over 2.4 million people. These jobs range from special effects wizards to makeup artists, writers, set builders, and even ticket sellers. Collectively, they earn an astonishing $186 billion in wages each year.

But there's more to it. When a movie or TV show films in a real location, it creates jobs, generates income, and helps local economies thrive. For instance, Marvel's "Black Panther" provided employment to more than 3,100 local workers in Georgia, earning over $26.5 million in wages. The popular TV series "This Is Us" contributed over $61.5 million to California's economy.
In New York, Oscar-nominated films like "The Post" and "The Greatest Showman" added over $108 million to the state's local economy. It's like a booster shot for communities, injecting a whopping $21 billion annually into over 260,000 businesses across cities and small towns, with most of these businesses being small and employing fewer than 10 people.

  2. Powerful Messages
Movies are not just for entertainment; they're also storytellers with a profound message. Consider the classic movie "Forrest Gump." Beyond its heartwarming story, it imparts essential life lessons: appreciate life, maintain optimism, savour every moment, and embrace new experiences. It's like a friendly nudge that leaves a lasting impact.

  3. Educational Marvels
Movies can be both educational and contribute to science. Take the mind-bending sci-fi movie "Interstellar" as an example. It didn't rely solely on imagination; it consulted experts like astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and former NASA scientist Kip Thorne to ensure scientific accuracy. But that's not all. The movie's team, along with physicist Kip Thorne, created incredibly detailed images of black holes. These images provided fresh insights into these cosmic mysteries and even led to the publication of two scientific papers. Movies can be a bridge between fiction and real scientific exploration.

Movies offer more than just popcorn and entertainment; they're a potent force with hidden talents. Stay tuned for more insights into the captivating world of movies. AI: Then, Now, and Tomorrow

Ever wondered how streaming services magically recommend the perfect movies or songs for you? Or marvelled at the technology that lets cars drive themselves? The answer lies in Artificial Intelligence (AI), a remarkable force that's been quietly shaping our world. But the concept of AI is actually more ancient than you might think.

You might recall the Tin Man, a character with a heart of metal who travelled with Dorothy through the enchanting land of Oz. Surprisingly, this fictional character offers an early glimpse into AI—a machine with human-like qualities that has intrigued us for generations.

Another figure in the AI tale is Alan Turing, a brilliant British thinker. He posed a profound question: "If humans can use information and logic to solve problems, why can't we teach machines to do the same?" Turing's groundbreaking ideas played a pivotal role in decoding secret messages during World War II, revealing that machines could transcend their conventional roles.

However, turning AI into reality was no easy feat in the past. Limited technological advancements and understanding stood in the way. But today, equipped with advanced tools and knowledge, we stand on the brink of fully integrating AI into our lives—an exciting opportunity to explore and harness AI's potential.

In our modern era, we generate an astounding amount of data—around 1.145 trillion megabytes daily. This amount of data has far surpasses our human processing capabilities. This is where AI and data analytics become our allies, sifting through vast datasets, extracting insights, and guiding us in making informed decisions.

Looking ahead, AI's role is poised to expand significantly. It is set to revolutionize various sectors, including medicine, transportation, and business operations. For example, AI could become a crucial collaborator for medical professionals, analyzing intricate medical images and transforming diagnostic and treatment approaches. Self-driving cars also exemplify AI's profound impact on transportation, promising safer and more efficient roads. Furthermore, AI can optimize supply chains and logistics, enhancing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

If you're intrigued and eager to be part of this exciting era, consider enrolling in UNIJI's Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence program. It's your gateway to a deeper understanding of AI, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for success in this dynamic field.
